Top Reasons you want to go Certified Organic. Certified.
Simply having “organic” on a package does not mean that food or the product within that package is organic. Labelling laws are not the greatest, so unfortunately you need to know what you are looking for. You must see CERTIFIED ORGANIC on the food you are paying organic prices for. CERTIFIED ORGANIC farms are not allowed to be within kilometres of other farms that are using chemicals and they have to be free of prohibited substances for 3 yrs to be eligible for the organic seal.
So here is a newbie for a lot of people- biosolids. Sewage sludge, also referred to as biosolids, are not permitted in certified organic foods. Biosolids contain heavy metals, toxins, steroids and more substances that can pose a threat to your health. Do you remember the “Nanna frozen berry’s” recall? They were laden with biosolids from Hepatitis containing Asians whom use human “biosolids” to fertilize their crops. Seriously, you don’t need ten reasons to go organic- you only need one, this one should do you. But i will continue…
One of the prohibited substances required for organic certification are genetically modified organisms (GMO’S).
There are two main types of engineered GMO crops:
Bt crops, produce an insecticide that dissolves the gut lining of insects. Then that same crop that just killed the insects who ingested it is harvested for humans to eat those same crops- with the same results, breakdown of out gastro intestinal lining. Really quite gob smacking is the whole GMO industry which is driven by Monsanto and money money money at any and all cost companies just like them.
The other most common GMO’s are “Round Up Ready Crops”. These are engineered to be resistant to the pesticide Roundup. this means the crops can withstand being sprayed heavily with glyphosate- the active chemical ingredient in Roundup. Herbicides like glyphosate act as endocrine disruptors in human cells, endocrine disrupters can alter the functions of the hormonal system and are linked to numerous cancers- that’s all!?
NO PERSISTANT PESTICES
Organic farmers don’t use persistent pesticides such as glyphosate and organophosphate pesticides. These were originally developed for chemical warfare. Organophosphate pesticides are a neurotoxin and exposure can affect brain development, fertility, testosterone and hormone levels. Studies have linked herbicides to obesity as well. Instead of these synthetic chemicals, organic farmers use natural methods to keep pests off of their crops. Some methods organic farmers employ are sophisticated crop rotation to disrupt the pest’s environment, introducing soil organism and insects that benefit the crops and traps or barriers pests.
NO ARTIFICIAL FLAVOURS OR PRESERVATIVES
There is no sense in mucking up what mother nature has done by adding artificial flavours. You can be sure no chemical concoctions or flavouring are added to organic food. Just one artificial flavour can contain hundreds of chemicals, and consuming these flavourings can lead to hyperactivity and allergic reactions. When you choose to go organic, you are choosing to avoid preservatives. Organic food is fresh food. You may have heard the saying “If your food can go bad, its good food” there is truth to that. Foods that last forever are loaded with artificial preservatives. Everyone has done the McDonalds burger experiment haven’t they- where a cheese burger can stay in perfect colourful condition for days on end sitting on your bench top! Yes- loaded full of chemicals and preservatives that enable that magic to happen. Imagine that “magic” trying to be digested and then absorbed into your body to “a-hem” (awkward cough) nourish your body?!? Lovely toxic fodder for your fat cells to harbour. Its those artificial preservatives that enable unhealthy foods to be kept in such a preserved manner that cause allergic reactions, nausea, diarrhea and even DNA damage! Damage to your genotype people- your genetics! Holy badoly… i say that a lot in this industry!
NO ANTIBIOTICS OR HORMONES
Antibiotics and Hormones given to animals on conventional farms make their way into the foods those animals provide. the prevalence of antibiotic usage with livestock leads to resistance and stronger strains of dangerous microbes. This can lead to antibiotic resistance in human as well. Hormones such as rBGH are injected into cows on NON organic farms to boost milk production. This can lead to various health problems with the cows, such as abnormal milk, fertility issues and hoof disorders. In addition, rBGH milk has significantly higher levels of the IGF-1 Hormone. That hormone has been shown to greatly increase breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men. In fact, drinking just 500mills of non organic dairy milk a day will increase a man chance of prostate cancer by 5 times!
An article in the LA times states that organic food was said to be more nutritious than its conventional counterpart http://www.latimes.com/science/la-sci-organic-foods-20140715-story.html
The findings were from 343 studies on organic nutrition, and data showed organic foods, on average, contained more antioxidants, higher levels of Vitamin C, 18 x more polyphenols. As a Nutritionist, it is a my job that i educate people as to why foods are just so amazingly regenerating and nutritive for you- it is the literally thousands of phytochemicals you learn about when studying Nutritional Medicine that gives you your ability to heal clients so well with food- Nutritional Medicine. Polyphenols can boost longevity and improve gut health. Organic foods that have avoided pesticides insecticides, herbicides fungicides and the raft of chemicals normal farming produce are subject to, actually develops more antioxidants as a defence against pests and insects. Let’s not forget it’s also those powerful antioxidants that enable a human being to thrive.
The key to better tasting organic food is the soil from which the crops are grown. Soil grown without chemicals soaking into it over and over season after season is nutrient rich. Organic farms on average produce smaller crop yields, allowing more nutrients to be drawn from the soil and available to the plant. This higher mineral and nutrient content allows for more nutrients, hence bright vibrant colourful fruit and vegetables, which is essentially more flavour more antioxidants! Organic food is harvested when its ripe- wow, there is a novel idea, harvesting when ripe! …. Unlike non organic farms that are gassed with ethylene to quickly ripen them or injected with dye for a more desirable colour- yes, injected with dye.
SUPPORT THE FARMER
Animals on organic farms are given land to graze on. An organic farm must accommodate the natural behaviour of the animal. This is one of the terms that a farmer must adhere to if they are to be an organic farm. That the animals live in an environment with a clean bed, fresh water, sunlight and access to the outdoors. Very basic requirements for a living feeling being, that NON organic farms do not have to provide. Do you support animals that are not allowed those basic necessities to live- you unknowingly do if you do not by organic. Organic farming practices will also keep the soil rich for future agriculture. Wild life and insects are also able to play their part in the ecosystem without chemical interference. The world’s population of Bee’s is on the way out thanks to GMO foods- have you checked out the list of plants that Bees pollinate? Anyone that enjoys living on this planet- which i think is most of us, will not do to well without bees- at all.
REDUCE POLLUTION SAVE ENERGY
As mentioned, organic farming does not use syntheti
c pesticides, this reduces chemical contamination of ground water and the whole environment- including everyone living “downstream” of every non organic farm using chemicals. Up to 70% of pesticides sprayed from aircrafts never reach the land targeted. Up to 35% of ground applied pesticides failed to reach their targets. So chemicals are floating all over a heck of a lot of the surrounding environment. Organic farming will use 30% less fossil energy, conserve more water in its healthy soil, induce less erosion and maintain soil quality.
Tell me again why you think organic is expensive, and start looking at why non organic food is cheap.
